Neighborhood Narratives is an Umpqua Bank program where we would install an installation or art exhibit in each store that reflected a narrative about that city. Together with a writing partner we crafted stories that were then turned into art pieces that went up in five locations, including two in Spokane, Seattle, Boise, and Clackamas Township.

Spokane Flagship: This narrative was an homage to the 1974 World’s Fair, which was hosted in Spokane. One of the main features of this narrative was a canopy, which was inspired by the US pavillion at the World’s Fair. The canopy is nested into a corner seating area where the story is written.

Boise: For this story we wanted to talk about The Greenbelt which is a really long walkway along the river that has several features and touristy type things along the way. So I wanted to make an abstract map, using slats to indicate miles away from the center. The river is featured in the negative space along the center, and mile markers call out some cool features people might enjoy visiting.

Clackamas Township: This narrative was about choice. Clackamas is located perfectly between Portland and Mt. Hood and there are a ton of adventures in between both. So we wanted to champion that for the community. From a design perspective this proposed an interesting problem with with column placed right in the corner with not a whole lot of space to do much of anything on either side. So instead I decided use the problem in our favor and anchor the composition on the column. So the typography kind of flirts both sides which was really at the root of the narrative itself.
